The Official CritterBase FAQ
QUESTIONS
ANSWERS
  1. Who created the CritterBase ? And why ?
I (Bluedive) did. One thing that always struck me as a shame was that the excellent material in the MG and NS was missing random encounter tables (RET), something often present in other RPGs.

So, my new-years resolution for 2005 was to remedy that. However, the RET would mean a substantial amount of data. So, I decided to first create a database containing all known BP flora and fauna and lo, the CritterBase was born.

  2. When should I roll on the random encounter tables?
That depends on where you are. I suggest the following rules:

Where Roll how often? When does an encounter happen?
    Open sea 4 times a day 1-2 on d10
    coastline 4 times a day 1-3 on d10
    Jungle 6 times a day 1-4 on d10
    Desert 3 times a day 1 on d10
    Polar region 1 times a day 1 on d10

  3. I'm confused, some random encounter tables say I should use 1d100, others say 1d1000. Which should I use ?
That depends on the random encounter table that you use. Some habitats allow for too many different creatures to generate a RET that uses a 1d100. In those case you will need a 1d1000.

  4. What's a 1d100 ?
1d100 stands for 'one hundred-sided die'. Now before you run off to your local RPG outlet to get yourself a 1d100 (and yes, they do exist) there's an easier way to roll a 1d100.

Take 2 ten-sided dice, and assign one of them to roll 10's. the end-result in that decimal die times ten, plus the value of the other die. Treat 00 as if you rolled 100.

  5. What's a 1d1000 ?
1d1000 stands for 'one thousand-sided die'. Now before you run off to your local RPG outlet to get yourself a 1d1000 (I doubt they exist) there's an easier way to roll a 1d1000.

Take 3 ten-sided dice, and assign one of them to roll 100's and one to roll 10's and one die to roll single numbers.
Treat 000 as if you rolled 1000.
