From his cage, Mudu jovially greets them and apologizes. Itís his fault they are here. This is the home of his group of freedom fighters, and he has told his chief where the partyís camp was.
It turns out that he was not the only survivor when Hanover captured the boat he was on. Stacey, the girl in the cage on their left, also was part of his group and also survived. Somehow she avoided being captured, returned home and has accused Mudu of being a traitor. Not knowing who to trust, the chief chucked both of them in the slammer.
Since the group has not much else to do they invite Mudu and Stacey to tell their respective stories
Mudu tells : The chief of the group ordered him to smuggle weapons from a contact in Freemantle. He refuses the divulge the name and nature of the contact but says itís very unlikely he was the one selling them out. During the night, just after they had left in a rubber boat their boat was raided. The pilot of the boat was shot from a jumpcraft. He tried to save the pilot instead of bailing out and was caught. The rest dived overboard. He assumed saw how others of his boat were intercepted and killed by Hanoverís orcaís.
Stacey tells : She agrees with Mudu that it is unlikely that the Freemantle contact sold them out. During night, just after they had left in a rubber boat they were raised. She jumped overboard with the rest and clung to the bottom of the boat so the orcaís echolocation would not detect her. She saw how the rest of the group got ripped apart by the orca's. After the orca's had left she surfaced and saw how Mudu voluntarily boarded a Hanover jumpcraft of his own free will.
Stacey is also very distrustful of the group and accuses them of being in league with Hanover, just like Mudu. Alex tries to reassure her; "Trust me, Iím not a spy"
The group discusses both stories, but after a few hours of bickering can not decide which one is telling the truth. They decide to sleep on it, but not without setting up a guard roster first.
|121.100||During her watch early in the morning Eileen picks the lock of their cage and wakes Alex to scout the cave they are in. |
Eileen: "Wanna come ?"
Alex : "No, first we need a plan. Is Stacey asleep?"
Eileen: "Letís throw some rocks at her to see"
After careful observation they decide Stacey is indeed asleep and they wake the others. Rave and Frank sneak out of the cage to scout the cave. Rave is silent as the night but Frank slips on some rubble. No-one comes to investigate the noise though
Frank has spotted a recess in the far wall. After he has hoisted himself up to see whatís there he stares straight into the business end of a mike. Shit. So anything theyíve said so far has been listened to.
Frank and Rave retreat to the cage and Eileen locks their door.
The rest of the day passes by. The most exciting thing is that a few hours later 4 masked and armed men bring them breakfast.
Boring, boring, boring. Rave wistfully thinks back in the good old days that they were hunted.
The party looses track of time. At some point, the masked men return to bring them dinner. Shortly after, the feel woozy and pass out, except for Rave and Alex. The latter two decide to play dead for now.
Rave and Alex hear some shuffling of feet and cages being locked and unlocked. Then, a bucket of water is emptied on them. Marvelous way to wake up.
When the group has woken sufficiently, Mudu and Stacey are gone. In the middle of the cave a masked man exuding an air of confidence is setting cross-legged on the floor. Behind him are two armed guards, also masked.
The man politely asks the group to tell him their story, one-by one. Eileen is to go first
Eileen tells : She was incarcerated for an assassination attempt on an Hanover official, but she was betrayed, arrested and dumped on Böse Strand.
Frank tells : Except for Eileen they were convicted for their part in the assassination of Hanover President Werner Keinz. When they were on the island they approached Mudu because he needed protection and could provide food. Also, he tells about the submarine they found and escaped with. The questioner thinks itís a very suspicious coincidence that they found that sub so soon.
Alex : When asked, he says doesnít know who the spy is. He hypothesizes that neither Mudu nor Stacey are spies, but that a third party is trying to make them a scapegoat.
The masked man explains his dilemma. Until he knows who the traitor is he can not trust either of them. OR the party, for that matter. To prove themselves, the group to devise a way to find out whoís guilty.
The suggest a few fool-proof ways to single out the traitor. Plans include torture, suicide missions; extortion but the masked man does not consider any of these ideas fool-proof enough.
The masked man tells them heíll be back next evening, and orders a cage-reshuffle. Frank will be locked up with Stacey, Rave with Mudu and Alex and Eileen will remain in the center cage.
While Mudu & Stacey are being retrieved the party agrees that theyíll pretend to have been out the entire time. If either Mudu or Stacey is a traitor then thereís no need for them to know that the group has spoken with the masked-man-who-is-most-likely-the-chief. Also, Frank has noticed something strange during the interrogation. He had assumed that their questioner had known about them. After all, their faces have been broadcasted over all Poseidon. However, form the body language of the man Frank could clearly see that when Frank told him this, it was new to him.
That night, as Frank is looking at Stacey, his bionic eye detects something hard under Staceyís skin; a small square, an inch each side. He decides to keep it silent for now.
|122.100||The next morning he confronts Stacey with the object under her skin. Stacey denies any knowledge about such a thing. According to Frank, hypnosis or painkillers could make Stacey oblivious to whatever is under her skin.|
When the masked questioner comes to speak with them that evening Frank tells of his discovery.
Stacey is overpowered, dragged from her cage, and Frank (being a doctor) is given a knife and medkit and ordered to remove the square box. But Frank has plans of his own. He first removes the layer of skin and asks if Eileen can check if the thing contains explosives. The masked man agrees.
Eileen canít detect any evidence of explosives, so the box is removed and examined more closely. It contains a transponder plus a capsule and some kind of release mechanism.
This is enough evidence for the freedom fighters. Stacey is taken away, and the group is released. The man takes of his mask. He is a Polynesian man, somewhere between his 40ís and 50ís who introduces himself as Oliveira
The group is taken to the main cave where the freedom-fighters have their HQ where Oliveira treats the part as his guests, offers them something to drink and eats, then offers them a deal they canít refuse : Heíll help them get of Westcape. Only thing they need to do is blow-up an outpost belonging to Ö Hanover.
WellÖ That certainly can be arranged.
